The baseball community is mourning the loss of Kevin O’Malley, a former part-owner of the San Diego Padres and respected minor league baseball executive, who died at the age of 50 following complications related to sepsis. His passing has left family, friends, colleagues, and generations of baseball supporters reflecting on a life dedicated to both the sport and those he loved.
According to his family, O’Malley passed away Tuesday while receiving hospice care in Santa Barbara after battling health complications. His father, Peter O’Malley, confirmed that Kevin became ill during a business trip to New York last fall before returning to Los Angeles for medical treatment as his condition worsened.
Born into one of baseball’s most influential families, Kevin was the son of former Los Angeles Dodgers president Peter O’Malley and the grandson of Hall of Fame executive Walter O’Malley, whose leadership helped bring Major League Baseball to the West Coast. Inspired by that legacy, Kevin built his own career in the game, working with the Dodgers organization before co-founding Top of the Third Inc., which operated minor league clubs including the Stockton Mudville Nine and the Visalia Rawhide.
In 2012, he joined the ownership group of the San Diego Padres alongside members of the O’Malley and Seidler families. Beyond baseball, Kevin was the founder and managing partner of Carmelina Capital Partners, a growth equity investment firm. A graduate of Harvard-Westlake School and the University of Pennsylvania, he later earned an MBA from The Wharton School.
Kevin is survived by his wife, Allison, their children Grace, Brendan, Brooke, and Margaret, his father Peter, siblings Katherine and Brian, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Annette.
Kevin O’Malley will be remembered for his passion for baseball, entrepreneurial leadership, and devotion to his family. His contributions to the sport and the enduring O’Malley baseball legacy will continue to be honored for years to come. May he rest in peace.
