HENRICO COUNTY, Va. — A tragic wrong-way crash in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 9, 2026, claimed the life of Skylar Mackenzie Vargo, a young Virginia woman, and prompted a large emergency response along Interstate 295 in Henrico County.
According to the Virginia State Police, the fatal collision occurred at approximately 2:27 a.m. near the 28-mile marker on I-295.
Preliminary investigators say that a Hyundai was traveling south in the northbound lanes of the interstate when it collided head-on with a tractor-trailer. The violent impact caused the tractor-trailer to leave its lane of travel, cross through the median, and enter the southbound lanes before eventually coming to a stop.
The driver of the Hyundai has been identified as Skylar Mackenzie Vargo, 23, of South Chesterfield, Virginia. Authorities said Vargo became trapped inside her vehicle after the collision, and the car was quickly engulfed in flames.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and worked to free Vargo from the wreckage. She was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but, despite lifesaving efforts, she was later pronounced deceased.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the crash.
Due to the severity of the incident, the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team and the Motor Carrier Safety Team responded to assist with documenting the scene and determining the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
Hazardous materials crews were also called to the scene after the tractor-trailer began leaking diesel fuel and oil onto the roadway. The interstate remained partially closed for several hours while emergency personnel cleared the wreckage, cleaned up the fuel spill, and conducted a thorough investigation.
Authorities have since confirmed that all lanes of Interstate 295 have reopened.
The circumstances surrounding why the Hyundai was traveling in the wrong direction remain under investigation. Virginia State Police have not released any additional information at this time as investigators continue working to determine exactly what led to the devastating crash.
