NEW BRUNSWICK, Canada — Atlantic Canada’s business and technology community is mourning the loss of Gerry Pond, a pioneering telecommunications executive, entrepreneur, investor, and mentor whose leadership helped shape the region’s modern innovation economy. Pond died peacefully at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of technological advancement, business development, and entrepreneurial mentorship.
Pond was widely recognized as one of Atlantic Canada’s most influential business leaders. Over a career of more than 45 years in the information and communications technology sector, he played a central role in transforming the telecommunications industry while later dedicating himself to building a thriving startup ecosystem throughout the Maritimes.
His professional career reached national prominence during his tenure as chief executive officer of NBTel, where he guided the company through a period of rapid technological change and increasing competition. Following the creation of Aliant Telecom, Pond served as its president, helping oversee the organization’s evolution during the era of telecommunications deregulation while positioning it as a recognized leader in innovation and customer service.
Although his accomplishments in telecommunications were significant, many consider his greatest contribution to have come after leaving corporate leadership.
Determined to help cultivate the next generation of entrepreneurs, Pond became a driving force behind Atlantic Canada’s emerging technology sector. As founding CEO of Mariner Partners and through East Valley Ventures, he invested in promising startups while providing invaluable mentorship to countless founders navigating the challenges of building innovative companies.
His support proved instrumental in the success of several companies that would become internationally recognized, including Radian6 and Q1 Labs, two landmark technology firms whose growth demonstrated that globally competitive businesses could flourish in Atlantic Canada.
Beyond investing, Pond believed in creating lasting infrastructure for entrepreneurship. He co-founded Propel ICT, an organization dedicated to accelerating technology startups across the region, and helped establish the Pond-Deshpande Centre at the University of New Brunswick. Both organizations continue to foster innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurial education for aspiring business leaders.
Throughout his career, colleagues consistently praised Pond for his willingness to mentor emerging entrepreneurs. Rather than simply providing financial backing, he invested his time, experience, and personal guidance, earning a reputation for candid advice, thoughtful leadership, and genuine encouragement. His outstanding contributions were recognized with numerous prestigious honours, including appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada and the Order of New Brunswick, along with multiple lifetime achievement awards celebrating his impact on business, technology, and economic development.
Friends and colleagues say Pond’s influence extended far beyond boardrooms and investment portfolios. His vision helped transform Atlantic Canada into a respected centre for technology innovation while inspiring generations of entrepreneurs to pursue ambitious ideas close to home.
Gerry Pond is survived by his wife, Anne, daughter Suzanne, son Gregory, and many extended family members, friends, business associates, and entrepreneurs whose lives he influenced throughout his remarkable career.
