For nearly a decade, the gentleman from South Carolina offered the republic a masterclass in ideological elasticity, transforming himself from a sharp, clear-eyed critic of the populist surge into the most pathetic, sycophantic cheerleader on Capitol Hill.
One can only hope that with his exit, the United States Senate has seen the last of such frantic, unprincipled genuflection, allowing a more dignified, constitutional conservatism to finally reclaim its spine.
