Sweeney dedicated more than 15 years of service to advancing public education throughout Georgia. His leadership extended from the local level to statewide education initiatives, where he worked to strengthen opportunities for students and support schools, educators, and families across the state.

Before his statewide service, Sweeney served for eight years as an elected member of the Cobb County Board of Education, including time as chairman and vice chairman. In April 2019, he was appointed by Governor Brian P. Kemp to the Georgia State Board of Education, representing Georgia’s 6th Congressional District and later the 11th Congressional District following redistricting. In January 2020, he was elected chairman of the State Board of Education.

During his time as chairman and throughout his continued service, Sweeney was recognized for his steady leadership, especially during challenging periods for Georgia’s education system. Following his chairmanship, he continued working with the State Board of Education through the District Flexibility and Charter Schools Committee, collaborating with education leaders and local districts to expand opportunities for students.

In February 2025, Governor Kemp appointed Sweeney to the State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia, where he continued his commitment to public education until his passing. Commissioners and education officials described him as a champion for Georgia students, known for his thoughtful approach, professionalism, and ability to bring people together.

Beyond education leadership, Sweeney also served as a Senior Business Advisor at InPrime Legal and held leadership roles with organizations including the Georgia School Boards Association and the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Throughout his professional and public service career, he was remembered for his experience, guidance, and dedication to improving the communities he served.

Those who knew Sweeney personally also remembered him as a loving husband, father, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sandy, and their two sons, Gabe and Jake. Colleagues and friends expressed their deepest condolences to his family, remembering the joy, friendship, and meaningful conversations they shared with him over the years.
