In Loving Memory of Nick Shepard

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Outreach Manager, Nick Shepard. While Nick was an extraordinary leader and dedicated member of the Fresh Start team, he was so much more than a colleague. He was our friend, our mentor, our advocate, and the heart of our organization.

Nick devoted his life to serving others with compassion, dignity, and unwavering commitment. His work reached far beyond the individuals experiencing homelessness whom he tirelessly supported every day. He built meaningful relationships with agency partners, government representatives, landlords, local businesses, and countless members of our community. He believed that lasting change could only happen when people came together, and he spent every day building those bridges with kindness, honesty, and respect.

Those who worked alongside Nick will forever remember his determination and his unmistakable presence. Whether he was leading his outreach team through brush, creeks, and difficult terrain to reach an encampment, or arriving “almost late” to a meeting carrying his signature extra-large tea, he always came with a smile, a story, or an unforgettable anecdote. His humour could brighten even the hardest days, and his perspective reminded us why this work mattered.

Nick was a leader in every sense of the word. He never hesitated to speak up when someone needed a voice. He advocated fiercely not only for the people he served but also for his colleagues, our agency, and our community as a whole. His courage, integrity, and compassion inspired everyone around him to do better, be better, and never lose sight of the humanity at the centre of our work.

We are eternally grateful to his family for sharing him with us, for supporting his calling, and for allowing us the privilege of knowing the remarkable man he was. We hope they find comfort in knowing that his compassion, generosity, and spirit have left an immeasurable impact on so many lives.

We have been deeply touched by the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, messages, and memories from everyone who knew Nick and from members of the Fresh Start family. Every story shared is a reminder of the extraordinary difference he made and the countless lives he changed simply by being himself.

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our clients, who came together this week to ensure our staff had the time and space to grieve. Their compassion and understanding speak volumes about the respect and admiration they had for Nick and the meaningful relationships he built through his work on the streets and within our unhoused community. It is a beautiful reflection of the trust, kindness, and hope he inspired in others.

Nick had a rare gift for making difficult work feel lighter. His thoughtfulness, humour, wisdom, and unwavering belief in people brought teams together, strengthened partnerships, and created lasting change throughout our community. He reminded us that every person deserves dignity, every voice deserves to be heard, and every act of kindness matters.

Although our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the time we had with Nick. His legacy will live on in every life he touched, every person he encouraged, every relationship he nurtured, and every act of compassion that continues because of the example he set.
