ELKTON, S.D. — Family, friends, and the Elkton community are mourning the tragic loss of Shane Brown, 40, who died following a skid loader accident Tuesday afternoon while working on a family construction project near Elkton.

According to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at approximately 2:47 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at a residence along South Dakota Highway 13 near 483rd Avenue.

Emergency crews from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Elkton Fire Department, Elkton Ambulance, Brookings Ambulance, and North Memorial Air Service responded to reports of an accident involving a Case 1845B skid loader.

When first responders arrived, they found Shane Brown suffering from critical injuries.

The preliminary investigation determined that Brown was operating the skid loader as part of preparations for a future construction project at family property. While operating the equipment, he was ejected from the skid loader and became trapped underneath it.

Other individuals who were at the scene acted quickly to free Brown from beneath the machine before emergency personnel arrived.

Despite their efforts and the lifesaving measures performed by first responders, Brown could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office and the Brookings County Coroner continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
