VALDOSTA, Georgia — July 13, 2026 — Authorities are continuing to investigate a suspected murder-suicide that left two adults dead inside a Valdosta residence on Sunday morning. The incident remains under active investigation by the Valdosta Police Department (VPD) and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Police were dispatched to the home after receiving a report that a man was threatening to harm himself. When officers arrived, they reportedly heard a gunshot from inside the residence, prompting them to enter the home immediately out of concern for the safety of anyone inside.
Upon entering, officers found a toddler alive and unharmed, along with a deceased woman and a deceased man who appeared to have sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The child was safely removed from the residence by responding officers.
Although the names Michael Lindsey and Shelby Leopold have circulated on social media and in online reports, neither the Valdosta Police Department nor the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has officially identified the deceased. Until authorities make a formal identification, those names remain unverified.
Police Response and Initial Findings
According to investigators, officers responded to the residence after receiving information that a man was threatening suicide. As they approached the home, they heard a gunshot from within, leading them to force entry into the residence.
Inside, officers discovered a 29-year-old woman who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound and a 32-year-old man with what police described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A toddler was also located inside the home but was not physically injured.
The child was immediately taken to safety, and emergency responders secured the scene while detectives began their investigation.
Investigation Remains Active
Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected murder-suicide. Both deceased adults were transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner’s Office, where autopsies and additional forensic examinations will be conducted to establish the official causes and manners of death.
Investigators have not yet disclosed several key details, including the relationship between the two adults, the relationship between the toddler and either deceased individual, the sequence of events leading to the shootings, or whether any previous domestic incidents were connected to the case.
Law enforcement officials have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that additional information will be released only after evidence has been thoroughly reviewed.
Identities Not Officially Confirmed
Despite widespread online speculation identifying the deceased as Michael Lindsey and Shelby Leopold, officials have not verified those identities.
As of publication, police have identified the victims only by their ages and genders. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has not released their names, and no public statement confirming the identities has been issued by family members.
Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid treating unverified reports as confirmed information.
Toddler Found Safe
One of the most significant developments in the case was the safe recovery of the toddler inside the residence. Police confirmed that the child was unharmed despite being present during the fatal incident.
Officials have not disclosed the child’s exact age beyond describing the child as a toddler, nor have they provided information regarding the child’s relationship to the deceased adults or current custodial arrangements.
Investigation Continues
Police Chief Leslie Manahan extended condolences to those affected and noted the devastating impact domestic violence can have on families and communities. While investigators have not announced a motive or confirmed the circumstances that led to the shootings, the incident has renewed public attention on domestic violence awareness and intervention.
Authorities continue gathering forensic evidence, witness statements, and medical findings. Additional verified information, including the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the incident, is expected to be released after next-of-kin notifications and the completion of the investigation. Until then, officials encourage the public to rely on updates from the Valdosta Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation rather than unverified online reports.
