Roswell Police Investigating Homicide After Andrew Lujan-Huerta Found Fatally Shot in Hondo River Channel

ROSWELL, N.M. — The Roswell Police Department is investigating the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old man whose body was discovered Tuesday evening in the Hondo River channel on the city’s southwest side.

The victim has been identified as Andrew Lujan-Huerta, 46, who authorities said was experiencing homelessness.

According to the Roswell Police Department, officers were dispatched shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, after a 911 caller reported discovering his friend deceased in the river channel behind a trailer park on McCall Loop, just west of South Sunset Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located Lujan-Huerta’s body and determined he had suffered at least one gunshot wound. Investigators have classified the case as a homicide and immediately began processing the scene for evidence.

Detectives with the Roswell Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. At this time, authorities have not announced any arrests, identified any suspects, or released information regarding a possible motive.

Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area or who has information that could assist investigators to come forward. Even seemingly minor details may prove valuable as detectives work to determine what led to the fatal shooting.

The homicide remains under active investigation.

The case comes as Roswell police continue to investigate the death of another man experiencing homelessness. On June 14, the body of Kent Hoffman, 56, was found in the Hondo River channel near the downtown area in what is also being investigated as a homicide.

Despite the similarities in location and the victims’ circumstances, investigators said they do not believe the two cases are connected. The Criminal Investigations Division continues to pursue both investigations independently while following all available leads.

Authorities are asking anyone with information related to either homicide to contact the Roswell Police Department at 575-624-6770. Investigators emphasize that community assistance can play a critical role in helping bring justice to the victims and providing answers to their families and loved ones.

The Roswell Police Department has indicated that additional information will be released as the investigations progress.
