Robert Batchelder Obituary: 19-Year-Old Manchester Man Dies in Apparent Drowning in Merrimack River
CANTERBURY, N.H. — Family, friends, and the Manchester community are mourning the tragic loss of Robert Batchelder, 19, who died Wednesday following an apparent drowning in the Merrimack River in Canterbury.
According to the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol, the incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, when authorities received a report that a swimmer had gone underwater and failed to resurface.
Marine Patrol officers responded to the scene at approximately 12:56 p.m., where members of the Concord Fire Department launched a rescue boat to search the river. First responders located Robert near the middle of the river and recovered him from the water before immediately beginning lifesaving efforts.
He was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
State Police identified the victim as Robert Batchelder, 19, of Manchester.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Robert had been swimming with a co-worker when he began experiencing difficulty in the water. Witnesses and bystanders attempted to reach him and provide assistance, but despite their efforts, he disappeared beneath the surface before they could bring him to safety.
Authorities have stated that, at this time, the death is not believed to be suspicious. Investigators continue working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The response involved numerous public safety agencies, including the Canterbury Police Department, Boscawen Police Department, Merrimack County Sheriff’s Office, Concord Fire Department, Canterbury Fire Rescue Department, and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, all of whom assisted in the emergency response and subsequent investigation.
