Forsyth County Lockdown: Shelter-in-Place Lifted After SWAT Response and Manhunt

A large law enforcement operation in Forsyth County, Georgia, prompted a shelter-in-place order, road closures, and a SWAT response Tuesday after a domestic dispute escalated into gunfire, authorities said. The situation has since been resolved, with two suspects taken into custody.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly after 8:30 a.m. to reports of shots fired near Kelly Mill Road and Barrett Downs Drive. Investigators said the shooting stemmed from a dispute between individuals who were known to one another. During the incident, stray bullets reportedly struck a nearby home, including a child’s bedroom, prompting an immediate emergency response.

As deputies arrived, they established a secure perimeter and issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the surrounding neighborhood. SWAT officers and crisis negotiators were called after authorities believed an armed suspect had barricaded himself inside a nearby home. Kelly Mill Road was closed between Johnson Road and Barrett Downs Drive, and motorists were urged to avoid the area while the operation remained underway.

After clearing the residence, investigators determined the suspect was no longer inside, prompting a large-scale manhunt involving K-9 units and multiple law enforcement agencies. Authorities later located and arrested the suspect after a resident reported seeing movement in a nearby backyard. A second individual connected to the incident was also taken into custody.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said one suspect faces an aggravated assault charge, with additional charges expected as the investigation continues. Officials have not reported any injuries to responding deputies or members of the public during the operation.

Following the arrests, the shelter-in-place order was lifted and Kelly Mill Road reopened to traffic. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the shooting and are asking anyone with relevant information to contact the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities thanked residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the hours-long emergency response, emphasizing that public safety remained their top priority as deputies worked to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
