A fatal shooting near the Berlin-Hudson town line in Massachusetts triggered a large-scale law enforcement response Tuesday, culminating in a lengthy police standoff that shut down portions of Interstate 495 before the suspect was found dead.
According to investigators, the incident began at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Highland Commons, a shopping center located on the Berlin-Hudson line. Police responded to initial reports of an assault with possible gunfire and discovered a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite emergency medical efforts, the victim died at the scene. Authorities said the victim and the suspect were acquainted.
Officials said a witness followed the suspect’s vehicle after it fled the shopping plaza, allowing Massachusetts State Police to track it onto Interstate 495 near Lowell. Troopers stopped the vehicle, prompting a major police operation that involved SWAT officers, crisis negotiators, bomb squad personnel, and drone units. Both the northbound and southbound lanes of I-495 were closed for several hours as the standoff unfolded.
Authorities later confirmed that the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound before being taken into custody. No officers or bystanders were injured during the highway standoff.
The identities of both the victim and the suspect have not yet been publicly released pending family notification. Investigators have not disclosed a motive but indicated that the shooting does not appear to have been a random act of violence. The investigation remains active as detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Residents in Hudson and neighboring communities were urged to avoid the affected areas while police secured the crime scene and processed evidence. Traffic gradually resumed after authorities cleared the interstate and concluded the emergency response.
Officials are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information that could assist investigators to contact local law enforcement. Additional details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
