Hugh W. Smith Death, Obituary: In Loving Memory: Hugh W. Smith, 82, Dies Two Weeks After Tallapoosa County Crash

An Auburn man has passed away following injuries he suffered in a serious vehicle crash in Tallapoosa County, leaving family, friends, and loved ones mourning the loss of a life that touched many.

The victim was identified by Alabama State Troopers as Hugh W. Smith, 82, of Auburn. Authorities said Smith died on Tuesday, July 14, nearly two weeks after he was critically injured in a crash on U.S. 280 near Camp Hill.

The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, on U.S. 280, approximately two miles southeast of Camp Hill. According to investigators, Smith was driving a Toyota Tacoma when it was struck by a Lexus IS250 driven by 23-year-old Cheaney M. Keel of Alexander City.

Following the initial impact, Smith’s Toyota left the roadway and collided with a tree. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and Smith was transported to East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika for treatment. He was later transferred to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery as he continued to fight for his recovery.

Despite medical efforts, Smith sadly succumbed to his injuries on July 14.

Also injured in the crash was 79-year-old Wanda Smith, who was treated following the collision. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
