The Canisius High School community, the University of Dayton family, and countless friends and loved ones are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Matthew Mayer, whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident on July 6. He was just 20 years old.

Matthew, a member of the Canisius High School Class of 2024 and a student entering his junior year at the University of Dayton, was remembered not only for his academic achievements and athletic talent but also for the character and kindness that defined his life. His sudden passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Among those paying tribute is Canisius High School Soccer Coach Orville Roberts, who reflected on the remarkable young man Matthew was both on and off the field.

“I will always remember his bright smile,” Roberts said. “He was the definition of a student-athlete.”

Having coached Matthew throughout his time at Canisius, Roberts shared that some of his most treasured memories were the conversations they had before and after training sessions. He described Matthew as someone who carried himself with humility, kindness, and quiet determination.

“As his head coach, I shared so many behind-the-scenes moments with Matt,” Roberts recalled. “He was such a good person, always kind and mild-mannered. I will always remember his bright smile and our conversations before and after training.”

Roberts also praised Matthew’s unwavering commitment to excellence in every aspect of his life.

“He was the definition of a student-athlete—Honor Society in the classroom, and he worked hard to become a starter and played a big part in our program’s success. We will honor him this coming season.”

Matthew’s dedication extended far beyond the soccer field. He was known as a hardworking student who balanced academic excellence with athletics, earning the respect of his teachers, teammates, coaches, and classmates alike. His work ethic, humility, and positive attitude made him a role model for others and someone whose presence elevated those around him.
