The Lake Cumberland community is mourning the unexpected passing of Paul Sagel, affectionately known by many as “LP Boater,” whose death has left family, friends, and countless members of the boating community heartbroken. Paul passed away unexpectedly at State Dock, leaving behind a legacy of friendship, kindness, and meaningful contributions to the lives of those who knew him.
Paul was a passionate boater who found joy on the water throughout his life. His love for boating extended across Lake Cumberland, Florida waterways, and the Ohio River, where he created lasting memories and built friendships with fellow boating enthusiasts. As a longtime slip holder at State Dock, Paul became a familiar and valued member of the boating community.
Beyond his love for the water, Paul was also recognized for his professional achievements. During his career with Procter & Gamble, he was known for his role in the invention of Crest White Strips, an innovation that went on to improve oral care experiences for many people around the world.
Those who knew Paul remember him not only for his accomplishments but for the person he was. Friends describe him as humble, thoughtful, and always willing to make others feel appreciated. Despite the success he achieved, Paul remained grounded and focused on the people around him.
A friend who had the opportunity to meet Paul at Manhattan Harbor on the Ohio River in Cincinnati shared a memorable exchange that reflected Paul’s character. When told he was “the famous LP Boater,” Paul responded with humility, saying that the other person was the famous one. That moment captured the way Paul lived — always making others feel important.
Paul’s kindness extended beyond his boating circles. Friends remember his encouragement, generosity, and the support he offered to those around him, including during important moments in their lives.
As the community grieves this tremendous loss, thoughts and prayers are with Elizabeth Lauren, Paul’s family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will continue through the friendships he built, the waters he loved, and the lives he touched.
