A major wildfire broke out at Whitmoor Common near Guildford, Surrey, on Thursday afternoon, prompting a large-scale emergency response as firefighters worked to contain the rapidly spreading blaze.
According to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, emergency crews were called to the fire at approximately 2:15 p.m. after reports of a significant fire in the open on Whitmoor Common. Firefighters quickly mobilized an extensive response, with around a dozen fire engines and specialist wildfire resources deployed to tackle the incident.
Authorities have urged members of the public to stay away from the area while firefighting operations continue. Thick smoke has been visible from surrounding communities, and officials warned that changing wind conditions could cause smoke to drift across nearby roads and residential areas. Residents living close to the common have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.
Whitmoor Common is a protected heathland and nature reserve that has experienced several significant wildfires in recent years. The dry vegetation and warm weather conditions can allow fires to spread quickly across the heath, making firefighting operations particularly challenging.
Surrey Wildlife Trust also appealed to the public to avoid visiting the common during the emergency response, noting that even a single spark can have devastating consequences for wildlife habitats during periods of dry weather.
At this stage, no injuries have been reported, and authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire. Fire crews remain on scene working to contain hotspots and prevent the flames from spreading further.
Officials are expected to provide additional updates as the situation develops and once the fire has been brought under control. Members of the public are encouraged to avoid the area and follow instructions from emergency services until the incident is declared safe.
