IN LOVING MEMORY OF LUIS DIAZ MEDEROS, 34, AND MARIO MONTES

Two Lives Lost in a Tragic Commercial Vehicle Collision in Lea County, New Mexico

With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we remember Luis Diaz Mederos, 34, of Alton, Texas, and Mario Montes, 46, of Sanford, North Carolina, two men whose lives were tragically cut short following a devastating two-vehicle commercial motor vehicle collision near Jal, New Mexico. Their unexpected passing has left behind a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly life can change and how deeply a sudden loss can affect families, friends, loved ones, and entire communities.

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, a tragic collision involving two commercial motor vehicles claimed the lives of both drivers at the intersection of New Mexico Highway 128 and Orla Road in Lea County. What began as another journey on the road ended in an unimaginable tragedy, leaving two families facing the painful reality of losing someone they loved.

According to the Lea County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the scene at approximately 1:47 a.m., following a collision that occurred around 1:30 a.m. When a patrol deputy arrived, both commercial vehicles were fully engulfed in flames on the north side of the intersection. The scene was devastating, and the consequences of the collision would soon become clear as two men were found deceased near their respective vehicles.

Preliminary information from investigators indicates that Luis Diaz Mederos was driving a Kenworth commercial motor vehicle northbound on Orla Road when the vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign. The Kenworth then struck a westbound Peterbilt commercial motor vehicle traveling along Highway 128. The Peterbilt was being driven by Mario Montes.

Following the collision, both vehicles left the roadway and entered the bar ditch. The Peterbilt, which was hauling flammable materials, subsequently caught fire. After firefighters with the Jal Fire Department worked to extinguish the flames, both drivers were confirmed deceased.

Behind the official details of this heartbreaking incident are two human lives, two individuals whose stories meant something to the people who knew them. Luis Diaz Mederos, at just 34 years old, had so much life still ahead of him. Mario Montes, at 46, also leaves behind a life story that cannot be measured by the circumstances of his final moments. Although the full details of their personal lives and the loved ones they leave behind have not been released, their lives deserve to be remembered with dignity, compassion, and respect.

For the families of Luis and Mario, the pain of receiving such devastating news is something words can hardly describe. Losing a loved one unexpectedly is a heartbreaking experience, and when that loss comes under such tragic circumstances, the grief can feel overwhelming. Ordinary moments, familiar conversations, shared laughter, and memories that once brought happiness can suddenly become even more precious.

There are no perfect words to take away the pain of losing someone dear. In moments like these, families often find themselves searching for answers while trying to process a reality they never imagined facing. The road ahead may be difficult, filled with sorrow, reflection, and countless reminders of the people they can no longer hold close. During this painful time, may they find strength in the memories they shared, comfort in the support of those around them, and peace in knowing that their loved ones’ lives mattered.
